Stop Letting AI Waste Your Ad Budget
3 Proven Frameworks to Fix Underperforming Campaigns
Welcome to The Paid Media Mix— your source for real-world insights on AI, ad strategy, and what’s driving performance in today’s digital ad landscape.
This edition is landing just after a busy (and inspiring) stretch of travel and conference talks where I had the chance to speak about how AI is reshaping the way we approach campaign strategy.
The frameworks I’m sharing today are the same ones I presented live at Hero Conf 2025. These are the exact methods I’ve used to reduce wasted spend and make decisions faster.
In my experience: too many marketers treat AI like a magic switch and automation tool they can set and forget. ☹️
If you’ve been exploring AI tools but want to go deeper to train your ad systems for better results - this one’s for you.
There’s a widespread myth in digital advertising right now that AI is some magical fix. Just turn it on, and results roll in.
In today’s post, I’m breaking down 3 simple but powerful frameworks I use to train AI for better results across Google Ads, Performance Max, and other campaign types.
Whether you manage paid ads for clients or run your own campaigns, these will help you shift from auto-pilot mode to strategy-first mode.
The Problem We’re All Facing
AI-powered ad tools are here — and they’re fast, easy, and dangerously convenient. But default settings often work *against* you.
Smart Bidding can chase cheap, low-quality leads. Performance Max runs in placements you’d never choose yourself. Auto-generated ads sound bland and convert poorly.
If you’re not guiding the system, it’s not working for your business.
🟩 Framework 1: Feed AI Real Business Value - Not Vanity Metrics
Too many advertisers assign the same value to every conversion for a sign-up, a lead, a purchase - or worse, don’t assign value at all. That means your campaigns are optimizing for the easiest actions, not the profitable ones.
Use AI to calculate true lead value:
Prompt: “My average closed deal is $5,000 and my close rate is 15%. What’s the value of one lead?”
AI response: $5,000 × 0.15 = $750 per lead
Set a target CPL: $150
Target ROAS = $750 ÷ $150 = 5.0 (500%)
Feed these into your ad platform:
- High-value customer lists
- Offline conversion data
- Location-based modifiers
- CRM + GA4 outcomes
🟩 Framework 2: Give Your Ad Creative a Smarter Structure
Typical AI headlines:
- “Simplify Your Accounting”
- “Smarter Marketing for Small Businesses”
Instead, use:
Pain • Benefit • Proof • CTA
Example Prompt:
“Write 15 Google Ads headlines using this structure: Pain: Small businesses waste 10 hours weekly on manual bookkeeping. Benefit: Our software automates invoicing and tracking. Proof: 5,000+ businesses save 30%. CTA: Start Free Trial.”
Result: CTR doubled, conversions up 40%.
🟩 Framework 3: Use AI to Analyze Your Data
Export your Google Ads, GA4, or Meta data and try prompts like:
- “Which campaigns spend the most with ROAS under 2.0?”
- “Identify geo regions with CPCs 30% higher than average and poor conversions.”
Favorite waste-finding prompt:
“Group search terms with CPAs 50% above average. Calculate total spend + savings.”
Example: Healthcare client saved 15% by excluding “free clinic” search terms.
What This Means for Your Digital Marketing Strategy
Smart marketers are guiding the system:
- Revenue-based values
- Structured creative
- AI-enhanced insights
This is how you scale what works and cut what doesn’t.
Your Action Plan
- Audit conversion tracking — measure *value*, not *volume*
- Use Pain → Benefit → Proof → CTA
- Use AI tools like ChatGPT or Gemini for insights
The Bottom Line
Best marketers integrate AI by:
1. External AI calculates values
2. Platform AI scales them
3. External AI finds waste
4. Platform AI fixes it fast
